We are proud to present two front runners of Scandinavian sound art as the opening of Northern Winter Beat.
With Maria W Horn and Mats Erlandssons hauntingly beautiful mix of both amplified and acoustic four handed church organ and electronics we will fill Budolfi Church’s grandiose space of heavy and ethereal drones constructed of digital and analog synthesis.

Marias compositional practice uses minimalist structures and piercing power electronics utilizing both digital and analog synthesis as well as acoustic instruments and audiovisual components to examine psychoacoustic phenomena and aspects of human perception. The music performed in this setting uses amplified and electronically treated organ in conjunction with a fixed electronic part to create a hybrid instrument with a spectrally transformed timbre still anchored in the harmonic language associated with the body of music traditionally performed on the instrument.
This performance includes a live presentation of the piece Konvektion, originally composed by Horn in 2018. When playing the piece the two performers are instructed to measure the duration of each chord by the length of their individual breaths. Being as though the organ is a wind instrument this means that the massive streams of air vibrated by the pipes combine in a circular system connected to the air moving through the lungs of both performers.

On top of this, the renowned Punkt Festival out of Kristiansand Norway, will perform a live remix of Maria and Mats’ performance, a concept developed since the beginning of the festival in 2005, consisting of live samples from the previous concert and new improvised elements performed by Punkts own artistic directors Jan Bang and Erik Honoré together with critically acclaimed guitarist Eivind Aarset.

Live Remix
The live concerts at Punkt are used as sound sources and starting points for live remixes immediately following the concert, where the audience can listen to a re-interpretation – a Live Remix – of the concert they just heard, based on interplay between electronics (live sampling) and “real” musicians. This concept has proven to be an effective and interesting way of creating new music, due to the improvisational aspect, and the fact that the sound palette changes for each remix.
Artists who have taken part in the Punkt project include Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Laurie Anderson, Jon Hassell, John Paul Jones, Ensemble Modern, and the Norwegian improvisationalists Nils Petter Molvær, Sidsel Endresen, and Arve Henriksen. Live visuals, audio-visual projects, seminars and workshops are complementary and integral parts of the concept.
"

Punkt is the kind of festival that I dreamt of before it existed. For a short period in the sixties, we had things that resembled this, before artists and composers retreated to their predictable formats. Punkt does the exact opposite, and that’s why I like it. To connect things is culturally more interesting than to separate them." – Brian Eno (artist / producer), 2012.
