Tarnation is a deeply personal documentary built from decades of home video, audio recordings, photographs, and journals, in which filmmaker Jonathan Caouette traces his own life from childhood into adulthood while exploring identity, family, mental illness, and survival. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the film unfolds as a dense collage of memories and emotions, moving freely through time and allowing lived experience to dictate its form. Through this experimental approach, the film captures how self-documentation, performance, and image-making became ways of coping, understanding, and enduring, resulting in a landmark work of autobiographical cinema that immerses the viewer in the intensity and contradictions of a life lived on tape.
